I asked my dad for one piece of life advice he'd learned over the years, as a Father's Day gift.

He paused, thought for a long moment, and then said, 'Always make sure your phone is charged before you leave the house. Because that way, you can always call home.' My heart melted a little.

Growing up, my dad wasn't big on mushy stuff; hugs were brief, and 'I love you' was often replaced with a nod.

But then I realized, every time he quietly fixed my bike, mowed the lawn without being asked, or just sat with me when I was down, he was speaking volumes.

For Father's Day, I told my dad he could be in charge of absolutely everything.

He immediately adjusted the thermostat, offered unsolicited grilling tips, and then looked at me and said, 'Hi son, I'm dad!'

My dad always told me there wasn't a problem he couldn't fix.

And he was right. Every time I had one, he'd just tell me a truly awful dad joke, and suddenly, my problem felt a little less overwhelming... and I felt a lot more loved.
